In summer 2006, HESC and APC ordered copies of The First Thirty and its companion journal workbook, A Place To Sit, for high school & college students who are part of the St. John's Gear Up program. Then, they brought Greg Forbes Siegman -- upon whom The First Thirty is based -- to New York to speak with the students.

"The thing I liked was that he didn't talk TO us. He didn't even stand up behind the podium. He just pulled up a chair in front of the podium, so that he was, like, at our level, and talked WITH us, asking us questions." - No name given

"I'll be honest. When he walked in, I looked at him, and you know, he doesn't exactly look like us, and I thought there was no way we'd be able to relate to each other. But then he started talking with us, and it was like, in a way, we all came from the exact same place." - No name given

"Greg set the tone for our 'Life after high school' program. His presentation was incredible!! Based on the students evaluations, they greatly appreciated what he had to say and the fact that he didn't just come to lecture [them]...His visit has inspired our staff to read "The First Thirty" together as a unit so that we can make the St. John's University stronger..." - Yvette, St. John's Gear Up

At the event, a part of My Sleepless Nights -
Greg's art collection - was displayed for the students.
The portraits on display fit two basic categories. Those who inspire an interest in service, multiculturalism and diversity - and some of the entertainers who made Greg think more about the qualities it takes to succeed. The portraits on display included: Harriet Tubman, Morgan Freeman, Rocky Balboa, John F. Kennedy, Michael J. Fox, Madeleine Albright, Tupac Shakur and Nelson Mandela.

As always, during his 36 hours to, from and in New York, Greg also managed to have a bunch of unplanned, memorable adventures and meet a wide variety of interesting, diverse people from all around the world with all kinds of interesting stories and backgrounds.
The people he met during the 36 hours came from a long list of different places including: Illinois, Louisiana, New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, Massachusetts, Ohio, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Washington, Mexico, Finland, France, Jamaica, Grenada, Ghana, Bulgaria, Ethiopia, Nepal, India and Ireland.
The people Greg met from these different places taught him about a wide variety of things, including: music in India, weather in Finland, commerce in Grenada, how to create a soccer ball out of cellophane wrapper if you can't afford a soccer ball, the difference between psychology and psychiatry, life in Vietnam, the advertising industry, being displaced by Hurricane Katrina, karate, the difference between living on the West Coast and East Coast, how American films are received in Bulgaria, how athletes are treated in Ghana, observing Shabbat, how planes are built and fixed, theater, environmental policy, speech pathology - and autism.
